Grayscale lists 6 altcoins with high potential in 2025

The Grayscale Research team examines hundreds of digital assets every quarter in order to provide information for the FTSE/Grayscale Crypto Sectors family of indexes' rebalancing process. After this process, Grayscale Research provides a list of the top 20 assets in the Crypto Sectors universe.

Top 20 tokens with the most potential for the upcoming quarter

In its "Top 20" list of diverse cryptocurrency assets, Grayscale Research has added six new tokens that, in its opinion and based on a number of criteria, show a high degree of potential over the coming quarter.

The team stated in the December 30 press release by the company that it has rotated six tokens from the previous quarters out of the top 20 of the upcoming quarter, which includes TON, the UMA protocol, Near, Maker (Sky), Celo, and Stacks.

Hyperliquid (HYPE), Grass (GRASS), Jupiter (JUP), Virtual Protocol (VIRTUAL), Ethena (ENA), and Jito (JTO) are the six new tokens that are included. Other tokens listed are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Sui (SUI), Chainlink (LINK), Aerodrome (AERO), Arweave (AR), Aave (AAVE), Akash Network (AKT), Bittensor (TAO), Optimism (OP),  Uniswap (UNI), Helium (HNT), and Lido DAO (LDO).

Grayscale lists specific factors considered for selecting the tokens

The inclusion of these tokens was determined by factors such as network expansion and uptake, impending catalysts, fundamental sustainability, supply inflation and token valuation, and possible tail risks. Grayscale posted.

The focus for the first quarter of 2025, according to Grayscale Research, will be on themes related to the US regulatory environment, expansion of the Solana ecosystem, decentralized AI technologies and agents, and decentralized finance and staking.

Furthermore, Grayscale Research stated that it is still optimistic about the themes from the previous quarters, including tokenization, Ethereum scaling solutions, and decentralized physical infrastructure, or DePIN. According to the team, Celo has dropped off its "Top 20" list while Optimism, Chainlink, and Helium have all returned.

Growing competition between smart contract platforms

Grayscale's report also emphasized how intensely smart contract platforms are competing with one another. Even though Ethereum made significant gains in the last quarter of 2024, rivals like Solana and The Open Network are putting more and more pressure on it.

According to the research, these platforms are becoming more popular because they are finding innovative ways to solve the "blockchain trilemma," which involves striking a balance between scalability, security, and decentralization. Additionally, fee revenue is still a major factor in determining the token value of smart contract platforms. As a result, Grayscale listed Ethereum, Solana, Sui, and Optimism as exceptional smart contract platforms in its top 20 list for the first quarter of 2025.

The market capitalization of cryptocurrencies increased from $1 trillion to $3 trillion in Q4 2024, highlighting high-potential assets.
