Worldcoin Foundation unveils World Chain Developer Preview ahead of Mainnet

The Worldcoin Foundation has unveiled a developer preview of World Chain, its upcoming Layer 2 network, on July 9.

During this preview period, which is expected to take place later this summer, a limited number of developers will have the chance to explore, build, and test the network. Developers worldwide now have a unique opportunity to connect with over 10 million users of compatible wallets in 160 countries with the launch of the World Chain developer preview. This starts with the World App, which was developed by project contributor Tools for Humanity (TFH).

For the first time in Optimism, Reth, a high-performance Ethereum execution client developed by Paradigm, will run in shadow mode during the developer preview. Built utilizing the OP Stack and incorporated with the Worldcoin protocol, World Chain is safeguarded by Ethereum in the role of an L2, and it is designed to grow as a component of the Superchain network.

World Chain is supported by a number of partners, such as Alchemy, Safe, and Elliptic, who are dedicated to providing the best infrastructure and tooling available to developers who choose to build on the chain. The next few weeks will see the announcement of numerous other partnerships, including those with node providers, analytics firms, wallet infrastructure providers, block explorers, bridges, and many more.

Head of Network at Safe, Thibaut Sahaghian, said we are committed to helping every human achieve self-custodial ownership and excited to provide World Chain with Safe's advanced smart account infrastructure. During the World Chain developer preview, developers can leverage Safe{Core} infrastructure to craft remarkable user experiences for millions of verified humans, Sahaghian added.

What to expect from the World Chain developer preview?

The release of World Chain's developer preview is a big step forward because it will allow Worldcoin developers to use the OP Stack's strength to build ambitious applications, which will increase Superchain's impact, Optimism Unlimited's Chief Growth Officer, Ryan Wyatt, added.

The World Chain, as the new base for all World ID integrations, will contribute to the unification of the Worldcoin community. Later this year, the entire World App user base—which currently stands at over 10 million—will be transferred to World Chain. Users of the World App can send money digitally for free anywhere on the globe, access a service to exchange and explore cryptocurrency tokens, and (in countries that qualify) apply for Worldcoin Grants within TFH’s World App.

World Chain will give developers a platform to give people access to a range of applications that can enhance their lives in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and other regions.

One of the major driving forces for the development of the World Chain is addressing the exceptional scalability problems that result from this expansion. The company will set World Chain's block gas target to 10 MGas per block, or 5 MGas/s, which is double that of the current OP Mainnet setting. However, it will initially launch with a standard EIP 1559 fee market, the post added. The fee market algorithm uses the gas target to modify subsequent fee computations based on blockspace demand. In practical terms, this means that before the fee market is affected, World Chain will be able to handle about twice as much work as OP Mainnet.

To utilize Reth for the World Chain sequencer, the Worldcoin Foundation and other donors, including TFH, are allocating engineering resources. The first production-ready release and security audit of Paradigm's high-performance Ethereum execution client, Reth, were recently completed.

Georgios Konstantopoulos, General Partner and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Paradigm, said, "We are excited to work with Reth, an SDK for creating high-performance, production-ready blockchains, to support World Chain's scaling roadmap."

The standard execution client for OP Stack chains, Geth, will be the sequencer for World Chain when it first launches. Reth will be run in shadow mode so as to verify the blocks it generates against those generated by Geth. This is Optimism's first time.

The Worldcoin project is based on safety, privacy, and security, and the World Chain won't be any different. Since the first fault-proof system for Optimism is now available on the OP Stack, World Chain will be among the first chains to launch as a Stage 1 rollup.
