Recent announcements from US authorities cast a doubt on whether self-custodial wallet providers, Lightning service providers, or even Lightning nodes could be considered Money Services Businesses and be regulated as such.

Industry-leading self-custody wallet Trust Wallet posted an important announcement for Android users on its X handle (formerly known as Twitter) at 06:52 Monday, Eastern Time (ET), stating that unfortunately, Google has taken down the Trust Wallet app from the Play Store temporarily.
We received notice from Google about this possible action, and we filed an appeal several weeks ago. Nevertheless, Google removed our app while we waited for a response from them regarding our appeal.
However, it assured users that it would be fixed, and alternatively, they could download the Android APK from the website to keep enjoying Trust Wallet on Android.
Furthermore, users that are already using the Trust Wallet app on an Android device, the App Store iOS app, and Google Chrome Browser Extension versions are not affected, but users who uninstall the Android version won't be able to download it again until Google relists it.
It advised users against downloading or using any phony Trust Wallet apps from the Google Play Store in the interim, as scammers with a motive of compromise will attempt to pose as the official app to steal funds.
After approximately 39 minutes, Trust Wallet posted at 07:31 Monday, Eastern Time (ET), that the Android version of the app is back on the Google Play Store.
Community members were excited to learn that the app had been relisted on the Google Play Store, allowing new users to download it. However, some users expressed concerns about Trust Wallet's removal from the Google Play Store in light of growing regulatory pressure in the US to crack down on cryptocurrency wallets under self-custody.
Recently, the creators of Wasabi Wallets, zkSNACKs, announced in an official statement on Saturday that U.S. users of the self-custody wallet would be banned from accessing the application indefinitely.
Similarly, ACINQ’s Phoenix Wallet explained in a post on X on April 26 that due to recent regulatory developments, the firm will be removing the app from US app stores and will be assessing other potential impacts to our operations. Phoenix Wallet users were given until May 2 to adjust to the upcoming changes before discontinuing their services for customers in the United States.
Self-custodial wallets have been the subject of increased regulation recently due to worries that they could be used to support illegal activities like money laundering.
