Famous Japanese Dog Kabosu behind Doge meme Dies at 18
The famous Japanese dog Kabosu, behind the Doge meme and the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, passed away on the morning of May 24 at the age of 18 after a long illness.
According to a blog post from dog owner Atsuko Sato, Kabosu was found dead at 7:50 a.m. Expressing her feelings in writing with love and support for Kabosu over the years, Sato explained that the night before she ate plenty of rice and drank water while looking from the window, the soft light shone in, and outside the window, the birds sang on that beautiful morning. While I stroked you like you were sleeping, he passed away quietly. Kabocha is the happiest dog in the world, and I am the happiest person in the world. Sato said Kabocha is still close to me and is now smiling and wagging his tail.
She stated that a farewell party for Kabo-chan will be held on Sunday, May 26th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, along with hoping to hold a fun farewell party at Sakura Furusato Hiroba when the weather gets cooler.
Sato, a kindergarten teacher, adopted Kabosu, a female Shiba Inu dog, in 2008. The dog became popular in the early 2010s when Sato posted photos of her adopted dog on her blog. A particular image of her dog with a curious expression quickly went viral, giving birth to the “Doge” meme and dogecoin (DOGE) in 2013.
The crypto community responded overwhelmingly well to Sato's December 2022 announcement that Kabosu was in a "dangerous position" health-wise. The dog was diagnosed with acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma leukemia, and her condition later improved.
The Dogecoin cryptocurrency also uses a picture of Kabosu as its logo. In April 2013, after Elon Musk briefly replaced the X logo (formerly known as Twitter) with a picture of the dog, the price of the cryptocurrency skyrocketed.
The crypto community mourns the death of the iconic Doge meme and expresses their condolences as some fans share their favorite memories of Kabosu that made her famous on the internet.
