Bitcoin miner from 2009 awakens and sends BTC to Kraken

After more than ten years of inactivity, a second wallet containing coins generated in the initial two months of Bitcoin's release has recently regained activity. Only one month after the network's launch, the whale is holding bitcoin that was mined.

Data from Arkham Intelligence indicates that the dormant bitcoin whale address was reactivated earlier today, transferring 5 BTC, which is roughly around $300,000 at the current rate, to the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken earlier on Tuesday.

Early Miner Bitcoin jumps from $474,000 to over $80 million

According to Arkham, the whale moved Bitcoin to different wallets or exchanges multiple times between 2011 and 2014; following this, the wallet saw no activity for almost ten years. The value of its bitcoin holdings has jumped from $474,000 to over $80 million.

Three weeks ago, the wallet began transferring bitcoin to Kraken; thus far, it has transferred 10 BTC in three different transactions. Transferring tokens with a high value to an exchange is usually interpreted as a sale for fiat money, stablecoins, or other tokens. The wallet address still holds 1215 BTC ($77 million).

Satoshi Era Bitcoin miners moving coins

Recently, it has been observed that early Bitcoin miners, who received coins as rewards soon after Satoshi Nakamoto published the blockchain, have been moving their Bitcoin. About $16 million in Bitcoin was transferred by another Satoshi-era wallet last week. The wallet in question had been dormant for more than fifteen years.

On September 20, five miner wallets that received 50 Bitcoin (BTC) each as block rewards in 2009 started to transfer their funds. According to data from blockchain, three wallets received block rewards on January 31, 2009, while one wallet received the mining reward on January 29, 2009. A block was awarded to the final wallet on February 2, 2009.

A dormant Bitcoin wallet from 2014 moved more than $10.2 million worth of cryptocurrency in August 2024. An inactive Bitcoin wallet from 2010 transferred $3 million in BTC to the cryptocurrency exchange Binance earlier in June. One of the biggest amounts from the Satoshi era moved to exchanges occurred in December of last year when over 1,000 BTC were sent there. They were probably sold off.
