Binance Executive Gambaryan on crutches struggles in pains as he enters Nigeria court pleading for help
Binance Executive Gambaryan money laundering trial resumed on Monday as he arrived in court in Abuja on crutches struggling in pain and pleading for help.
According to a family statement, the Binance executive arrived in court in Abuja in a distressed state, using crutches after being refused access to a wheelchair. Health claims made by the family and legal team of detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan have been refuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gambaryan's family stated that he "can no longer walk" as a result of health problems related to a disk problem, the post added.
The lead attorney for the EFCC, Ekene Iheanacho, informed Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 2, 2024, that the health issues raised by the Binance executive were "not as serious" as he had been stating. The opposition was in response to a new bail request made by Mark Mordi, SAN, Gambaryan's attorney, asking for his release so he could take care of his health.
The Nigerian authorities have been taking good care of him, the EFCC lawyer noted, and have even taken him to several hospitals as part of their due diligence. The only thing standing in their way is the need to submit the medical report to the court. He also included a report from prison officials stating that Gambaryan is seen walking around the prison premises.

However, a video is circulating on social media showing the Binance executive on crutches crying for help to a Nigerian prison official to assist him as he is in pain.
On August 26, 2024, Gambaryan's family announced that he had been detained for six months and was experiencing excruciating pain from a herniated disc in his back. They said that in Nigeria, he had been refused access to quality medical care.
In addition to allowing Gambaryan to use a wheelchair, the judge decided to hear the bail request when the trial resumes on Wednesday. The court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) representative to produce certain documents that the Binance legal team needed for their defense during today's proceedings.
In March, Gambaryan filed a lawsuit against Nigeria's National Security Advisor and EFCC for allegedly violating his fundamental human rights. On Monday, he made a plea to the judge once more, claiming that he is not getting the proper medical attention in prison and that he is not allowed to see his attorney or embassy representatives.
The judge will continue to consider the motion for bail at the trial's next hearing, which is scheduled for September 4, 2024.
The FIRS and EFCC have filed two separate lawsuits against Binance and its executives, the first alleging tax evasion and the second charging money laundering and foreign exchange violations. Binance has been isolated after the FIRS dismissed the executives from its case.
